-Barrette Strikes Again

06/30/2002 - PWBA
      LIVERPOOL, N.Y. - Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. became the first multiple title winner of the 2002 Professional Women's Bowling Association season after she defeated Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla. 248-245 in the finals of the Greater Syracuse Classic at Flamingo Bowl.

      A winner last week at the Empire State PWBA Classic, Barrette's 25 career titles ties her with Patty Costello for third all-time in the PWBA annals.

      "Kendra bowled great today. I was very fortunate to get an early lead," said Barrette. "She struggled in the first few frames but once she got lined up I just did everything I could to stay with her because she was striking at will."

      Although both players completed 10 frames in the title match the heat of battle didn't really ensue until after the third frame. Following five consecutive marks combined Gaines left the third frame open after she failed to pick up a 3-9-10 split.

      Barrette, who entered the championships as the event's No. 1 seed, responded to Gaines third frame misfire with six consecutive strikes.

      "I was getting great ball reaction," she said. "If there is one thing I've learned over my career is you have to let things happen as oppose to always trying to make them happen. Kendra really picked things up after the third which put the pressure on me the whole match."

      Appearing in her fifth PWBA finals of the 2002 campaign, Gaines did not go quietly after the open third. The fifth-year pro matched Barrette strike for strike heading into the tenth frame. Gaines continued the torrid pace in the tenth by striking on her first ball before sparing to close out her game. Barrette entered the 10th needing a mark and eight pins to win the title.

      "I just wanted to get the ball off my hand and have a chance in the tenth," Barrette stated. "Kendra pushed me the whole match and in a way it helped me focus on what I had to do to win in the last frame."

      Gaines entered the finals as the tournament's No. 5 seed. The Floridian nearly missed a chance to bowl in the semi-finals but a clutch strike in the tenth frame of the opening shootout gave her a 246-245-174 victory over Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, NY and Cara Honeychurch, Melbourne, Australia.

      In the semi-final match Gaines dispatched reigning Player of the Year Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills 209-159.

      "I feel great about the way I bowled," said Gaines. "I beat some of the best players on our tour tonight. Leanne was three pins better than me in the finals. She deserved to win."

      For her second place finish Gaines cashed for $5,500. Dorin-Ballard earned $3,800 and Feldman and Honeychurch claimed $3,000 and $2,500 respectively.

      Sunday's championship round was the fifth consecutive live ESPN telecast. ESPN2 is scheduled to re-air the event on July 1 at 8:00 p.m (ET) and July 11 at 12:30 p.m.

      Championship-round results and their scores, earnings and playoff results in the Professional Women's Bowling Association's $60,000 Greater Syracuse Classic;
