-Dorin-Ballard Controls Leaderboard

06/27/2002 - PWBA
LIVERPOOL, N.Y. - Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas averaged 240.33 in the second round of the Greater Syracuse Classic at Flamingo Bowl to take over the leaderboard after 12 games of competition. The reigning Professional Women's Bowling Association Player of the Year is averaging a tournament-leading 228.75 with a 2,745 pinfall.

"This morning I struggled a little bit. Physically I felt good but I was having trouble getting strikes," Dorin-Ballard said. "Tonight I changed my game plan. I moved left a little and that helped increase my carry."

Dorin-Ballard, who recently was one of five nominees introduced for an ESPY award in the "Best Bowler" category, scorched the lanes in the evening session. The 17-time titlest chalked up a 744 series (208-258-278) to begin the night and finished with a six-game sum of 1,442.

Dorin-Ballard leads second place Shana Ray, Corpus Christi, Texas by 11-pins. Ray, who has crossed pairs with Dorin-Ballard throughout the first two rounds, recorded the top series of the evening with a 778 (279-231-268). The eighth-year pro is seeking her first career title. Her 227.83 and 2,734 leads third place Cara Honeychurch, Melbourne, Australia by 50 pins.

A winner two weeks ago at the Greater Harrisburg Open, Honeychurch co-leads the tour in championship round appearances with four. The lefty's totals of 223.66 and 2,684 give her a 10-pin edge over Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla. (222.83, 2,674) and a 45-pin margin over last week's winner, Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. (219.91, 2,613).

Local favorite Michelle Feldman of Skaneateles, NY gave a large contingent of family of friends plenty to cheer about at the end of the first day of competition. The right-hander tossed a 300 in her final game of the night increasing her career total to 17.

"That was probably the most nerve-racking 300 I've ever thrown," said Feldman. "I could feel every eyeball in this place staring at me as I got closer to the 10th frame."

Feldman leads a group of ten local amateurs and pros competing in this week's event. In her first game of round one she left a four-pin standing on her 12th toss to notch a first-round high 299. The 10th year pro currently stands in seventh with 217.33 and 2,608. Other New Yorkers among the top 24 include Cindy Coburn-Carroll, Williamsville (11th, 215, 2,580) and Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga (24th, 203, 2,436).

Qualifying for the 47-woman field resumes on Friday, June 28, at 10:30 a.m. with the last six game qualifying block. Following Friday morning's action the field will be cut to the top 24 for match play starting at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, June 29, match play continues with two more eight-game blocks at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. At the conclusion of match play, the top five bowlers compete in a stepladder finals during a live ESPN telecast on Sunday, June 30 at 4:30 p.m.

Dorin-Lizzi holds an 11-pin lead over Cheryl Daniels, Bloomfield, Mich. who tallied 223.66 and 1,342 in the six game block.

"Being this high in the standings is kind of new to me this year," Dorin-Lizzi said. "I usually give away my first six games and then spend the next two rounds catching up to make the top 24."

The tenth year pro opened up the morning with a 733 series (207-258-268). This season she ranks tenth in earnings ($13,455), 11th in competition points (3,265) and 17th in averages (210.70). A two-time college All-American from West Texas A&M, Dorin-Lizzi has appeared in one championship round this year. She has six top 20 appearances and has missed the top five TV cut on two occasions finishing sixth at the Women's International Bowling Congress Queens tournament and at the St. Clair Classic.

Fellow Michigan native Lisa Bishop trails Daniels by two pins with 223.33 and 1,340. The four-time titlest kicked off her round with a 256 and closed with a 663 series (221-225-217).

Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah and Kim Adler, Cocoa Beach, Fla. completed the top five. Turner registered 223.00 and 1,338 while Adler produced 222.50 and 1,335.

Skaneateles' Michelle Feldman leads a group of ten local amateurs and pros competing in this week's event. Feldman delighted the hometown crowd in her first game of the morning by tossing a first-round high 299. Feldman missed the perfect game on her last shot when she left a four-pin standing.
