-Dorin-Ballard Claims Top Seed For Finals Of $50,000 Greater Memphis Open

06/27/2001 - PWBA
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - For the second week in a row, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of N. Richland Hills, Texas, is the tournament leader going into the TV championship round as match play concludes at FunQuest Lanes' $50,000 Greater Memphis Open.

Dorin-Ballard stormed into the top spot Wednesday morning and solidified her position in the Wednesday night block by posting an 18-6-0 match play record. She averaged 225.92 with 10,029 pins, finishing 435 pins ahead of second-place Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., DiRupo's 17-7-0 match play record earned her 9,594 pins and a 216.28 average.

"[PWBA player] Anne Marie Duggan says you can be bowling great for seven, nine, 12 weeks in a row, but you never know when it might end," Dorin-Ballard said when questioned about the spurt that pulled her up from third place the previous night. "But it's obvious that when you're bowling well, something is clicking for you. kind of want to go with it and not start thinking too far ahead. So instead of You focusing on how well I've been bowling these past few weeks, I try to concentrate on the next day only.

"On this type of lane condition, you can never give up, because things can change around a lot in a day. I came in with a game plan today, and it worked. I did get a little mentally tired on the lanes Wednesday evening, but I think it was just a drop in the adrenaline, because I'd been on such a high all day."

Dorin-Ballard and DiRupo will be joined in the championship round Thursday night by Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla.; Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev.; and Carol Gianotti-Block, Perth, Australia. Gaines finished just seven pins behind DiRupo with 9,587 pins and a 15-9-0 match play record. Macpherson, the 2000 PWBA Player of the Year, claimed a 13-11-0 record and 9,541 pins, while Gianotti-Block sewed up fifth place with 9,470 pins and a 15-9-0 record.

The action starts at 7 p.m. Thursday with a one-game shootout match between Gaines, Macpherson and Gianotti-Block. The winner advances to the semifinal match, where she takes on DiRupo; and the winner of that match goes against Dorin-Ballard for the title and $9,000 first prize. Dorin-Ballard has won all three of her titles thus far in 2001 from the top-seed position.

The action will be carried live on the PWBA's web page, www.pwba.com, with the Webscorer feature (click on "Live Scoring" on the home page to access Webscorer). ESPN2 will broadcast the championship round Monday, July 2, at 9 p.m. and re-air it Thursday, July 5, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern). Travelodge Hotels Inc. is offering a $50,000 bonus to any bowler who rolls a perfect game on the TV finals.

-Dorin-Ballard Assumes Lead In $50,000 Greater Memphis Open

06/27/2001 - PWBA
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, moved to the top of the charts during Wednesday morning's match play round in the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open, underway at FunQuest Lanes in Collierville.

Dorin-Ballard, whose victory last week at the Ft. Worth Classic was her third of the 2001 season, won seven matches and turned in an eight-game block score of 1,827 pins to take over the lead. She has a total pinfall of 8,029, a 225.55 average, and a 12-4-0 match play record going into the final session of match play Wednesday evening.

Currently in second and bidding to make her second TV show of the year is Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev. The reigning PWBA Player of the Year holds an 11-5-0 record with 7,815 total pins, for a 220.14 average. She is trailing Dorin-Ballard by 214 pins.

"The reason I'm in first place right now is that I won seven matches and had three really good games," said Dorin-Ballard, who included scores of 267, 278 and 257 in her early block. "This has been a very long and hard swing, given the distances between tournaments and the concentration required to bowl on the Sport Bowling condition. I've been finding myself wandering mentally a little bit this week. I've been trying to keep tabs on when that happens, and when it does, I walk away from the playing area, or talk to someone-I try to do something to 'wake myself up' and refocus on the lanes."

Tuesday night's leader, Kendra Gaines, is in third place with 7,696 pins and a 9-7-0 match play record, while Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., follows in fourth, with 7,601 pins and an 11-5-0 record. DiRupo has rolled the tournament's lone perfect game thus far.

Rounding out the top five is Lynda Barnes, Flower Mound, Texas, with a 9-7-0 record and 7,588 pins.

Memphis' Pam Vickery, the only local bowler to reach the match play round, won four matches Wednesday morning and is in 24th place. Vickery is averaging 199.55 with 6,995 total pins and a 7-9-0 match play record.

The final eight games of match play begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The top five at the conclusion of Wednesday's competition advance to the TV stepladder finals Thursday night, which begin at 7 p.m. with a shootout match between the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 bowlers. The shootout winner meets the No. 2 bowler in the semifinal match, and the winner of that match takes on the tournament leader for the $9,000 first prize and Greater Memphis Open title. The championship round action can be followed as it occurs on the PWBA web page (click on "Live Scoring" to access the Webscorer feature). It will also be broadcast on ESPN2 Monday, July 2 at 9 p.m. and re-aired Thursday, July 5, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern). Travelodge Hotels Inc. will award a $50,000 bonus to any bowler who rolls a perfect game during the championship round.

-Kendra Gaines Moves Into Lead At $50,000 Greater Memphis Open

06/27/2001 - PWBA
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., soared into the lead at the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open at FunQuest Lanes in Collierville Tuesday night, thanks in large part to a 290 game in the midst of an eight-game series of 1,950 pins.

Gaines, who owns one PWBA title, didn't roll the high game of the round, however. That honor went to Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., who scored the tournament's first 300 two games earlier-in a match against Gaines. DiRupo, who is averaging 220.38, compiled a perfect 8-0-0 match play record and stands in second place, 18 pins behind Gaines, who has 5,988 total pins and a 223.38 tournament average. The Floridian fashioned a 6-2-0 record Tuesday night.

"I think the last time I led a tournament was during a round in Sebring in 1998, and that was the tournament I won," Gaines said. "I've been working very hard with John [Gaines, her husband] to be more patient and stay in the moment when I'm competing. I've also worked on keeping my feet slow and letting the ball do the work. I'm finally seeing the results of this on the lane, so my brain is allowing my body to accept the new way of doing it. Before this, my body was still trying to manufacture the results on the lane."

Gaines, who edged into the TV finals in the Ft. Worth Classic, says the touring pros are starting to solve the puzzle that the Sport Condition presents, and as a result, more players are moving in and out of the leader board at an event. "One thing about the Sport Condition pattern is that it keeps everyone within reach. You can still make a move, even if you're not bowling that well, by hanging in there and rolling a good game or two."

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, remains in third place after boosting her total pinfall to 5,950 with a 5-3-0 match play record. Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., holds fourth place with 5,938 pins following a 7-1-0 match play performance, while Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., retains fifth place. Macpherson has 5,894 pins and a 5-3-0 record.

Early leader Aleta Sill, Dearborn, Mich., won just one match Tuesday night and slipped into 10th place, with a pinfall count of 5,587. Memphian Pam Vickery also tumbled in Tuesday night's action, slipping to 23rd place with a 3-5-0 record and 5,308 pins.

Match play continues Wednesday with squads at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., after which the field will be cut to the top five. Those bowlers will square off for the tournament's $9,000 first prize Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m. The championship round action can be seen as it occurs on the PWBA's web page via the Webscorer feature. It will also be broadcast on ESPN2 Monday, July 2, at 9 p.m. and re-aired Thursday, July 5, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern).
