-'Leder' Is Still The Leader At The $50,000 Greater Memphis Open

06/25/2001 - PWBA
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - Dearborn, Mich.'s Aleta Sill, who answers to the nickname "Leder," is just that after 12 games of the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open at FunQuest Lanes in Collierville.

Sill inflated her total pinfall to 2,699 by the end of Monday evening's qualifying round to average 224.91 and lead her nearest challenger, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, by 53 pins. Ballard is averaging 220.50 with 2.646 pins. Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., is in third place, 20 pins behind Dorin-Ballard, with a 218.83 average.

Sill admitted that playing defensively probably cost her some pins, as she rolled two games in the 190s after deciding against a ball change late in the round.

"I probably should have changed equipment, but I decided to gut it out instead because I'd been doing so well with just one ball," she said. "What is nice is that, as the leader, I can go into Tuesday morning's competition knowing I can relax a little and that I'm not on the bubble to make the cut to the top 24. When you're in a position where you're forced to bowl well, you tend to make bad choices. That makes you tighten up and you start making bad shots."

Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., who rolled a perfect game last week in the Ft. Worth Classic, came within three pins of being perfect again Monday with a 297 game, the high for the tournament thus far. She is in fourth place with 2,623 pins and a 218.58 average, while Lynda Barnes, Flower Mound, Texas, sits in fifth with 2,613 pins and a 217.75 average.

The Memphian mother-and-daughter combo of Pam Vickery and Deborah Warner are in 27th and 33rd place, respectively, with pinfall counts of 2,361 and 2,335.

Six more games of qualifying begin Tuesday at 11 a.m., after which the field will be narrowed to the top 24 players. Those survivors begin match play Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. with an eight-game block. Match play continues Wednesday with eight-game blocks at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

-Aleta Sill Sprints Into The Lead At $50,000 Greater Memphis Open

06/25/2001 - PWBA
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - Aleta Sill of Dearborn, Mich., the first professional woman bowler to cross the million-dollar barrier in career earnings, is in the lead after six games at the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open, underway at FunQuest Lanes in Collierville.

Sill opened with a 182 game but then had nothing lower than 234 as she fashioned a six-game series of 1,400 pins for a 233.33 average. She admits that the past year has been a struggle as she's tried to adjust to a variety of changes in her game and herself. "I've been trying to develop a softer hand with my shot. My generation of bowlers is used to doing more with the ball, throwing it harder and manipulating it; but the Sport Condition doesn't accommodate that well. It rewards bowlers who have a clean, fluid release, and it's very important to have the right ball in hand to match up with the condition. If you don't have the right ball, and you don't execute properly, those errors are going to be magnified in the ball's reaction on the lane. It's not uncommon to change strike balls two, three or even four times during a block now, to stay on top of the lane transition. You also need to learn when to make the change, and which ball to select."

"What makes it extra difficult is when you've experienced being on top in your sport and then have to start over again. It affects your confidence every week when you're in that position."

Maxine Nable of Australia is Sill's nearest competitor after the first block of qualifying, with 1,353 pins and a 225.50 average. The 2000 PWBA Player of the Year Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., is third with 1,319 pins and a 219.83 average. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, is in fourth with 1,297 pins and a 216.16 average, while Kim Adler sits in fifth with 1,288 pins and a 214.66 average. Adler won the most recent PWBA tournament held in the Memphis area, the 1997 Sam's Town Tunica Mid-South Classic.

Pam Vickery, Memphis, Tenn., is the top local in the standings. The seven-year pro is 33rd with 1,155 pins and a 192.50 average.

The 50-woman field returns at 6:30 p.m. Monday for six more games. They complete qualifying with six additional games Tuesday morning, beginning at 11 a.m., after which time the field is shaved to the top 24 for the match play phase of the tournament. Match play begins Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
