-Nable Still On Top At Empire State PWBA Classic

06/21/2002 - PWBA
LATHAM, N.Y. - Maxine Nable, Australia, continued her hot pace to hold the lead at the Empire State PWBA Classic at Bowlers Club in Latham, N.Y. Friday evening. Nable won six of her eight head to head matches, averaging a 233.38 for the tournament and holds a 86-pin lead over second place Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif.

"I'm pretty happy with the way I'm bowling right now," said a smiling Nable, "Being the leader is a place I've not been in lately, so I'm not thinking about anything except winning matches."

Nable didn't pop for any large scores during the evening, but managed to bowl enough to win the majority of her matches with a high game of 248 and a low of 193.

16-year tour veteran Barrette won five of her matches this evening with a high game of 279 to hold on to the second spot and 92 pins ahead of third place Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev.

"Experience does help in match play, I've been through it all and I keep a positive, open mind," said Barrette, "With the scoring high, as it's been this week, it's very important to keep winning your matches."

Rounding out the top five are Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah, who went 5-3 in match play to hold down fourth place and just two pins behind her in fifth is Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y.

Tennelle Grijalva, Yorba Linda, Calif., delighted the crowd this evening when she stroked the first 300 game of the tournament in her seventh game of the eight-game block.

One local Albany bowler, Linda Follett, survived the cut to match play starting the evening block in 23rd. She put together a 2-6 win-loss record for this evening and is currently in 24th place.

Saturday, June 22nd the top 24 continue match play with two more eight-game blocks at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. At the conclusion of match play, the field is cut to the top five bowlers who will compete in stepladder finals during a live ESPN telecast on Sunday, June 23rd at 4:30 p.m.

-Nable Finds Room To Become New Leader At Empire State Classic

06/21/2002 - PWBA
LATHAM, N.Y. - All she was waiting for was a little room to the right. Maxine Nable, a dynamic right-hander from Australia, powered her way into the lead at Bowlers Club in Latham, N.Y. to head the field going into match play at the Empire State PWBA Classic.

"The right side of the lane had room for me to swing the ball', said Nable, who is averaging 235.27 for the event, "On tour we don't get to see that very much, but it's a type of condition that I do well on."

Nable made herself at home right from the start of the event. After the first round she was lurking in sixth place and made a move up to second place by the end of the second round. During her six-game block Friday morning, she averaged 243.66 to command first place.

Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., also made her move closer to the top of the chart with a 231.27 average and is currently sitting in second place.

Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah, the second round leader, slipped slightly to third place, while Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Richland Hills, Texas, and Tennelle Grijalva, Yorba Linda, Calif., round out the top five respectively

One Albany area bowler survived the cut into match play and three others cashed as the strong contingent of Albany area bowlers continued to display their talents. Linda Follet, Albany, N.Y. moves into match play at 23rd place while Debbie Schoonmaker, Albany, N.Y., and Michelle Barker, Ballston Spa, N.Y. cashed in 29th and 30th place.

"It's always been my dream to bowl out here on tour and it's something I'd like to do in the future," said Follett, who maintains a full time job as a transportation manager. Her earnings will be put to good use when she gets married in October of 2004. "I hoped to cash and have a good time, but this is great! I was a little intimidated by these incredible bowlers, but the touring pros have all been wonderful and really made me feel at home."

The 54-athlete field is now cut to the top 24 bowlers. These top 24 return Friday evening for the first round of match play starting at 6 PM. Saturday, June 21st, match play continues with two more eight-game blocks at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. At the conclusion of match play, the top five bowlers compete in stepladder finals during a live ESPN telecast on Sunday, June 23rd at 4:30 p.m.
