-Ft. Worth Classic Marks PWBA's Return To Texas

06/13/2001 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, ILL. - The Professional Women's Bowling Association will hold its first Texas-based national tournament in three years when it arrives in Ft. Worth for the $50,000 PWBA Ft. Worth Classic June 17-21. The Don Carter Cityview center is hosting the event.

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, returns to her hometown area seeking her third victory of the year. She won the WIBC Queens Championship in May to begin the 2001 PWBA Spring/Summer campaign and followed with a victory at the $50,000 Albuquerque Open in June. Dorin-Ballard is expected to be joined by 2000 PWBA Player of the Year Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev.; 2000 PWBA Rookie of the Year Cara Honeychurch; and a host of local bowlers, including former Team USA coach Susie Reichley of Richardson and amateur standout Sandy Dacy of N. Richland Hills.

The Ft. Worth Classic should also be the venue where Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., becomes the new "ironwoman" of professional bowling. Johnson is expected to compete in her 201st consecutive pro tournament in Ft. Worth, surpassing the mark of 200 held by Jan Schmidt of Rochelle, Ill. Johnson, a 23-time pro titlist, is upfront about her desire to make PWBA history and set the standard as high as she possibly can: "I want to do something that everyone will remember, and I want to bowl until I can't compete anymore."

Tournament Week begins Sunday, June 17, with the official PWBA practice session from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Pro-Am squads follow from noon to 8 p.m., giving amateur bowlers a chance to test their bowling skills against the pros in a nine-pin no-tap doubles format tournament for cash prizes (youth bowlers play for trophies and other prizes). Pro-Am entrants also receive a certificate signed by their professional partners, a coupon for a free 3-day/2-night stay at the all-new Suncoast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a chance to have their photos taken with PWBA players.

Professional competition begins Monday, June 18, with qualifying rounds. Players bowl six-game blocks at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday, and six more games Tuesday at 11 a.m. The field is then cut to the top 24; match play for those survivors begins Tuesday with an eight-game block at 6:30 p.m. Two more eight-game blocks of match play follow Wednesday, June 20, at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The top five scorers following Wednesday's action advance to the televised stepladder finals Thursday, June 21, at 7 p.m. The stepladder finals air on ESPN2, Monday, June 25 at 9:00 p.m., with a repeat showing Thursday, June 28, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern).

-Duggan Digs In To Take Top Seed For Greater San Diego Open TV Finals

06/13/2001 - PWBA
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., held off a determined Cara Honeychurch in the final game of match play to secure the top seed for Thursday's TV stepladder finals of the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open at Grove Bowling Center.

Honeychurch defeated Duggan in actual score, 177-172, but even with the 30 bonus pins she received for winning the match, the Australian star was unable to overcome the 39-pin lead Duggan took into the final game. Duggan's total pinfall count through 42 games tallied up to 9,110, and Honeychurch closed at 9,106. Duggan finished with a 16-8-0 match play record, while Honeychurch's was 17-7-0.

"The conditions were pretty much as I thought they would be for the final set," Duggan admitted. "I don't think we could get any closer than we were; we both struck in practice but then struggled during the game. That's the kind of shot it was. Any mistake you made was amplified on the lanes, and we were both probably pressing a little to get the upper hand in the match. I left two splits and took the 2-pin off the 5, so I think I was the one who lucked out in the end."

Joining Duggan and Honeychurch among the five TV finalists are defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas; Stacy Rider, La Habra, Calif., and Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., who finished second last week in the Wheelchair Awareness Classic. Dorin-Ballard finished with 9,075 pins and a 14-9-1 match play record; Rider clocked in with 8,973 pins and an 18-5-1 record, while Adler moved past Marianne DiRupo of Succasunna, N.J., in the last game to take fifth with 8,913 pins and a 14-10-0 record.

The top five contend for the title and $9,000 first prize of the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open Thursday, starting at 7 p.m. Dorin-Ballard, Rider and Adler begin the action in a three-person, one-game shootout match, and the highest scorer moves on to challenge Honeychurch. The winner of that pairing goes against Duggan in the title bout. The finals will be telecast on ESPN2 Monday, June 18, at 9 p.m. and re-aired Thursday, June 21, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern). Travelodge will reward any bowler who rolls a 300 game in the stepladder finals with a $50,000 bonus.

-Duggan Stakes Her Claim To Top Spot At $50,000 Greater San Diego Open

06/13/2001 - PWBA
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., carded a six-game series of 1,394 pins Wednesday morning to move back into the top spot at the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open, underway at Grove Bowling Center.

Duggan, who led after 18 games, improved her match play win-loss-tie record to 13-5-0 and total pinfall to 7,833 to lead Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, by 13 pins going into the final six games. Dorin-Ballard is the defending champion and is trying to capture her third title in 2001. Duggan, the 1994 PWBA Player of the Year, hopes to score her first victory since winning the AMF Rocket City Challenge in 1998.

"This is definitely a 'make your spares and keep the ball in the pocket' situation this week," said Duggan, who rolls one of the more powerful strike balls on the women's tour and is averaging 206.75 for the tournament. "I'm playing deep inside on the lane and using a three-piece reactive ball, which is a very weak-hooking ball, to keep the shot as straight as I can. I played the lanes Wednesday morning the same way I played them Tuesday night, and I don't foresee any changes for Wednesday afternoon. The key for me is to stay as firm as I can with my shot."

Tuesday's leader, Cara Honeychurch of Australia, slipped into third place, 120 pins behind Dorin-Ballard. Honeychurch finished Wednesday morning with an 11-7-0 record and 7,700 total pins. Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., is fourth with a 12-6-0 match play record and 7,626 pins, while Stacy Rider, La Habra, Calif., stays in the top five with 7,612 pins and a 14-4-0 record.

Local amateur Jolene Etem, Escondido, Calif., is in 17th with 7,259 pins and a 9-8-1 match play record.

The top five at the conclusion of Wednesday afternoon's competition will advance to Thursday's TV stepladder final and compete for the Greater San Diego Open title and $9,000 first prize. The finals begin at 7 p.m. with a three-way shootout match between the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 bowlers. The highest scoring bowler in the shootout takes on the No. 2 bowler in the semifinal match, and the winner of that pairing earns the right to challenge the tournament leader in the final game. The finals will be broadcast on ESPN2 Monday, June 18, at 9 p.m. and re-broadcast Thursday, June 21, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern). Any bowler who rolls a 300 game in the championship TV round will receive a $50,000 bonus from Travelodge.
