-Duggan Takes The Lead At $50,000 Greater San Diego Open

06/11/2001 - PWBA
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., outlegged Carolyn Dorin-Ballard in Monday's qualifying round at the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open, taking a four-pin lead into Tuesday's action at Grove Bowling Center.

Duggan had four games under 200 Monday, but her combined two-day pinfall of 3,789 was enough to survive Dorin-Ballard's closing 266 game and two-day tally of 3,785. Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, is seeking her third title this year, while Duggan is in search of her first championship since 1998.

"Yesterday I had one of the best blocks I've bowled in some time; and while I was still happy with the way I bowled today, I didn't get the same pin carry as I did Sunday. I think the lanes were much tougher today," said Duggan, who is averaging 210.50 thus far.

The 15-time PWBA champion said her game has been on the upswing since her husband, Pat, gave her some tips during the Albuquerque Open three weeks ago. "He told me that I needed to let the ball swing from the shoulder more and release it cleanly, and that I shouldn't try to help the ball down the lane. I've been working on that and am starting to get very comfortable with that feeling."

PWBA Hall of Fame member Robin Mossontte, Newhall, Calif., is in third, 32 pins behind Dorin-Ballard at 3,753, while another Californian, Kim Terrell of Daly City, is in fourth with 3,726 pins. Cara Honeychurch of Australia rounds out the top five with 3,684 pins.

Sunday's leader, Cathy Dorin-Lizzi, Linden, N.J., dropped into 10th place following Monday's round of play. She is averaging 200.22 with 3,604 pins for 18 games.

The top 24 scorers now move into match play, which begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. A second round of match play will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m., and two more rounds follow at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday. The top five at the conclusion of Wednesday's action will vie for the Greater San Diego Open title in a TV stepladder format Thursday at 7 p.m.

-Dorin-Lizzi Paces The Field At $50,000 Greater San Diego Open

06/11/2001 - PWBA
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Cathy Dorin-Lizzi, Linden, N.J., has the pole position after the first nine games of qualifying at the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open, underway at Grove Bowling Center.

Dorin-Lizzi was one of a group of three bowlers who had to replay one game because they bowled on an incorrect pair of lanes. She made the most of the opportunity by popping a 256 score to tally 2,000 pins for the day and move ahead of Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., who finished with 1,985 pins. The two are averaging 222.22 and 220.55, respectively.

"I'm going to savor every moment of this until 11 a.m. tomorrow, when the next squad begins," Dorin-Lizzi said. "After I missed the cut in Omaha [in the Miller High Life Open], I changed my approach from five steps to four. I've always been a hair's bit late in my timing, and switched to four steps to try to correct that. It's been difficult to do, but I've gotten more comfortable with the footwork and trust myself a lot more.

"Trusting myself has always been my biggest weakness. It's hard to be the sibling of one of the best bowlers around [Carolyn Dorin-Ballard], and I put a lot of pressure on myself to live up to other people's expectations. I'm aware that I have to beat 50 other bowlers, but people are more concerned with how I do against Carolyn, and I let myself get caught up into that too often. I have to remind myself to develop my own talent and stay within my own game and within the moment."

Trailing Dorin-Lizzi and Duggan are Julie Jackson, Rural Hall, N.C., with 1,935 pins and a 215.0 average; Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, 1,925 pins and a 213.88 average; and Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., 1,894 pins and a 210.44 average.

The 51-woman field returns Monday at 11 a.m. to complete qualifying with nine more games, after which the field will be narrowed to the top 24. The survivors begin the match play phase of the competition Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. with six games, followed by six more games at 2 p.m.
