-Adler's Lead Narrowed At $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic

06/05/2001 - PWBA
MESA, Ariz. - Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., saw her 251-pin lead narrowed to 79 pins during Tuesday afternoon's match play at the $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic, underway at Country Club Bowl.

Adler managed only a 1,205-pin set for six games in the second match play round, and won just three matches, to total 6,972 pins for 30 games. In the meantime, Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., put together the round's highest score, 1,422, and won six of eight matches to move into second place with 6,893 pins.

"I definitely found the lanes a little spottier this afternoon than I did this morning," Adler said. "I was back to playing my 'B' and 'C' games.

"I'm comfortable with what I'll be looking at Wednesday morning, condition-wise, but I'll definitely have to think about what kind of equipment and lane strategy to use Wednesday afternoon."

Adler, who considers herself a "tweener" (a bowler whose ball hook pattern falls between a straighter, down-and-in shot and a big curving hook), feels that bowlers with similar styles have had a tougher time acclimating to the Sport Bowling condition used at the first four PWBA stops this year than have the player at the extremes. "I think that the Sport condition was designed to be equal for everyone who has been bowling well thus far, but that it hurts 'tweeners' like me. We just don't seem to generate the same pin carry as the straighter players and the 'crankers.' I hope they can get a truer 'read' on how it affects our shot so that the conditions will be equalized for all."

In third place with 6,830 pins and an 8-4-0 record is Monday's leader, Anne Marie Duggan of Edmond, Okla. Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., stands fourth, also with an 8-4-0 record and 6,809 pins, while Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., is in fifth with 6,784 pins and a 7-5-0 match play record.

Defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, is in 10th place with 6,541 pins and a 5-7-0 match play record, 243 pins off the pace to make Thursday's TV stepladder finals.

Wednesday's schedule calls for two more rounds of match play, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., after which the field will be cut to the top five. Those bowlers advance to the stepladder finals Thursday afternoon, which begin at 2 p.m. The finals will be broadcast by ESPN2 Monday, June 11, at 10:30 p.m. and re-aired Sunday, June 17, at 3 a.m. (all TV times are Eastern).

-PWBA Is California-Bound For 2001 Greater San Diego Open

06/05/2001 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, ILL. - The Professional Women's Bowling Association returns to San Diego for the second consecutive Greater San Diego Open, to be held June 9-14 at award-winning Grove Bowling Center.

Defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, who began this year's campaign with a victory in the 2001 WIBC Queens Championship and later won the $50,000 Albuquerque Open, is among those expected to take the lanes in San Diego. Dorin-Ballard is hoping to break the spell that has cast her as the PWBA Runner-up of the Year for the past four years, and a victory in San Diego would enhance her chances of winning Player of the Year for 2001.

Among the top names expected to compete are 2000 PWBA Player of the Year Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., and 2000 PWBA Rookie of the Year Cara Honeychurch, Melbourne, Australia. California-based bowlers likely to make appearances include former PWBA Players of the Year Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Robin Mossontte, Newhall and Tish Johnson, Northridge; four-time PWBA Robby Award winner Kim Terrell, Daly City; and reigning U.S. Open champion Tennelle Grijalva, Orange.

Tournament Week begins Saturday, June 9, with the official PWBA practice session from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Pro-Am squads follow from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., allowing amateur bowlers to test their bowling skills against the pros in a nine-pin no-tap doubles format tournament while bowling for cash prizes (youth bowlers play for trophies and other prizes). Pro-Am entrants also receive a certificate signed by their professional partners, a coupon for a free 3-day/2-night stay at the all-new Suncoast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a chance to have their photos taken with PWBA players.

Professional competition begins Sunday, June 10. Players bowl one nine-game block each day Sunday and Monday, beginning at 11 a.m., and the field is cut to the top 24 following Monday's action. Match play for the 24 survivors begins Tuesday, June 12, with six-game blocks scheduled for 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Two more six-game blocks of match play follow Wednesday, June 13, also at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The top five scorers following Wednesday's action advance to the televised stepladder finals Thursday, June 14, at 7 p.m. The stepladder finals will air on ESPN2, Monday, June 18 at 9:00 p.m., with a repeat showing Thursday, June 21, at 1 p.m. (all times are Eastern).

-Adler Is Perfect As She Takes Over The Lead At Wheelchair Awareness Classic

06/05/2001 - PWBA
MESA, Ariz. - Cocoa, Fla.'s Kim Adler did her own impression of the desert roadrunner bird Tuesday morning and left the rest of the field in the starting blocks during the first round of match play at the $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic, underway at Country Club Bowl.

Adler's first career 800 series-823-in the final three games of the block, which included scores of 289 and 300, propelled her to a 1,519 six-game series and a 251-pin edge over Monday's leader, Anne Marie Duggan of Edmond, Okla. Adler lost just one match as she pushed her tournament average to 230.29.

"I've bowled well the past few weeks, but because I didn't bowl in leagues and tournaments during our winter break, I didn't have the competition mentality I needed when it came to the ninth and tenth frames," she said. "I wasn't operating at the standard I wanted to and needed to when it came time to make a crucial shot.

"Plus, I had to employ my 'B' and 'C' hand releases in past weeks to meet the lane conditions, instead of the one I prefer to use. Today, I found the conditions very similar to the way they were in Connecticut when I bowled in leagues there 10 years ago, and I was able to get very comfortable and play my 'A' game."

Adler's 300 game is the second thus far in the Wheelchair Awareness Classic, the other coming Monday from Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. Johnson, who went 2-4-0 in match play Tuesday morning, is currently in fifth place with 5,291 pins. The rest of the top five include second-place Duggan, with a 4-2-0 match play record and 5,426 pins; Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif., 4-2-0 and 5,391 pins; and Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., 2-4-0 and 5,295 pins.

Six more games of match play follow at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with two more six-game rounds scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The top five scorers following Wednesday's action advance to the TV stepladder finals Thursday at 2 p.m., which will be broadcast by ESPN2 Monday, June 11, at 10:30 p.m. and re-aired Sunday, June 17, at 3 a.m. (all TV times are Eastern).

-Duggan's Closing 299 Moves Her Into The Wheelchair Awareness Classic Lead

06/05/2001 - PWBA
MESA, Ariz. - Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., relied on a round-ending game of 299 to catapult into the lead after 18 games of qualifying at the Wheelchair Awareness Classic, underway at Country Club Bowl.

Duggan, who is seeking her first PWBA national title in three years, and six other players eclipsed early leader Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, in Monday's action. Duggan fired a nine-game series of 1,983 pins to total 4,052 for two days, with a 225.11 cumulative average.

"I'm very happy with the way I bowled today, and the way I've been bowling all season so far," said Duggan. "I haven't won, and I haven't gotten myself to the TV show yet, but I've made every cut and just missed the TV show for the WIBC Queens tournament in May."

Duggan also indicated that the daytime format employed in Mesa this week agrees with her game. "I enjoy bowling nine games all at once during the day, because you get a chance to eat dinner at a regular hour and relax a little at night. When you get a little older, you learn to pace yourself better, and that helps when you're bowling more games at a time."

Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., is sitting in second place with 4,045 pins and a 224.72 average. Johnson, who is competing in her 199th consecutive professional tournament, rolled the tournament's only 300 thus far, on the same pair of lanes (31 and 32) that Duggan shot her 299 on a few games later.

Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., is in third place with 4,008pins and a 222.66 average. Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., is holding down fourth place with 3,970 pins and a 220.55 average, while Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif., rounds out the top five with 3,958 pins and a 219.88 average.

Dorin-Ballard averaged only 197 in Monday's qualifying round to slip to eighth place with 3,905 pins, 147 pins behind Duggan.

The top 24 players begin match play Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. Match play squad times are 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, with the top five players after 24 games of match play competition advancing to the TV finals Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Country Club Bowl.

-Dorin-Ballard Holds Upper Hand At $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic

06/05/2001 - PWBA
MESA, Ariz. - Carolyn Dorin-Ballard continues to hold the hot hand on the PWBA Spring/Summer 2001 Tour, setting the pace in the first qualifying round of the $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic, underway at Country Club Bowl in Mesa.

Dorin-Ballard has now led for eight consecutive rounds of play over two tournaments, including the championship round of the $50,000 Albuquerque Open. Sunday's results for nine games found the N. Richland Hills, Texas resident 63 pins ahead of Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., 2,132-2,069. Dorin-Ballard ended her opening gambit with a 278 game to average 236.88 for the day.

"I have been bowling well the last four weeks," she acknowledged. "What is interesting is that, after yesterday's practice round, I thought this would be a very low-scoring tournament. Then I came in today and found the lanes very different from Saturday's condition. They started out pretty tough, but I was able to get comfortable with them by the end of our nine-game block. Usually, you can predict how the lanes will change over the week after the first day of qualifying, but I'm not even going to try to predict how they'll change this week."

Duggan, the 1994 PWBA Player of the Year, is averaging 229.88 as she seeks her first PWBA title in three years. Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., follows her in third with 1,987pins and a 220.77 average. Rookie Keli Rapp, Fayetteville, N.Y., is in fourth with 1,977 pins and a 219.66 average, while the 2000 PWBA Rookie of the Year Cara Honeychurch, Australia, rounds out the top five with 1,964 pins and a 218.22 average.

The entire field of 53 women returns to Country Club Bowl at 11a.m. Monday for their final nine games of qualifying, after which the field will be trimmed to the top 24. Those 24 survivors begin the match play phase of the competition Tuesday, starting at 9 a.m.
