-Feldman/Ellis Take No.1 Spot

06/01/2002 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The combo of Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, NY and April Ellis, Jackson, Tenn., closed out the final day of match play at the PWBA Women's Collegiate/Pro Doubles Challenge with 117-pin margin over the second place tandem of Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas and Mandy Bedwell, Terre Haute, Ind., to secure the No. 1 seeded position for Sunday's ESPN stepladder final at 3:30 p.m. (central).

Feldman and Ellis finished the tournament preliminaries with a 201.33 average and 12,195 pinfall. The pair posted a 14-10 match play record helping them maintain the top spot on the leaderboard for all three rounds of head to head competition.

"This has been a wonderful experience for me to bowl with some many top professionals," said Ellis. "I've had such a great week and I hope it will carry over into the finals on Sunday."

In addition to sustaining leads throughout the match play rounds, Feldman and Ellis were also the top two qualifiers among the professional and collegiate participants after the first 16 games of competition. Feldman averaged 236.37 while Ellis registered 197.5. Feldman is a ninth-year pro on the PWBA tour. The 2001 Bowlers Journal International All-American has one title in 2002 claiming the St. Clair Shores Classic two weeks ago in Detroit. Feldman's partner is a freshman from Pikeville College. The right-hander has a career-high 289 game to her credit and was an all-events champion at the Tennessee State Bowling Championships in 2001.

Dorin-Ballard and Bedwell chalked up the highest team average among the top five teams with a 206.70 and a 12,078 pinfall. In spite of just a 13-11 match play record the twosome managed three straight victories to complete the final round including a 244-234 victory over Feldman and Ellis. Dorin-Ballard is coming off one of the most successful seasons in the history of professional women's bowling. The reigning PWBA Player of the Year won seven titles in 2001 tying a 26-year old record set by Patty Costello. Bedwell is a senior from Indiana State University. The 1996 Indiana Junior Bowler of the Year was an all-events champion at the 2000 Indiana State Bowling Championships.

"I have a great partner," said Dorin-Ballard. "We compliment each other very well. Mandy's spare shooting was fantastic today."

Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla. and Melissa Brownie, Chester, Va. qualified third. Gaines and Brownie went 11-4-1 over the last two rounds of match play to help them stay in the top five. They finished 40 games with a 11,926 total and a team clip of 205.12. Gaines has been one of the PWBA's best performers in the last three weeks with two top ten finishes. After three PWBA event she ranks eighth in earnings ($5,620), seventh in competition points (1,591) and fifth in averages (220.87). Brownie is a freshman at Morehead State. In her most recent tournament, the math major finished 11th in the National Junior Gold competition.

Cathy Dorin-Lizzi, Linden, NJ and Shannon Sellens, Independence, Mo., moved up one spot to fourth with a final tally of 11,914 and 201.45. Dorin-Lizzi and Sellens had the best match play record of the tournament going 18-5-1. Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, NY and Krystal Havelka, Machesney Park, Ill., round out the top five with 11,788 and 195.83.
