-Single Membership Organization Study To Move Forward; Working Name For SMO Is Announced

05/30/2001 - Bowling Newsline
GREENDALE, Wis. - Acknowledging that revisions are needed, both American Bowling Congress (ABC) and Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC) Boards of Directors agreed the Single Membership Organization (SMO) concept study will continue. The decision came following the recent ABC convention and WIBC annual meeting. During those conventions, those in attendance were clear. Change is necessary and a structure different from zones and regions needs to be considered.

"Leadership of both organizations heard that message loud and clear at their conventions this spring," said WIBC President Joyce Deitch. As a result, the leadership will restructure the original task force with two ad hoc committees.

One of the new committees will develop the organizational and governance structure. That committee will be asked to focus its work on developing a plan that emphasizes state and local structures in its formation. To provide focus for the committee, the working name "United States Bowling Association" (USBA) rather than SMO will be used.

The second ad hoc committee will concentrate its efforts on identifying all legal and tax ramifications at every level of the consolidation.

"Leadership is extremely grateful to the original task force members who not only developed a high level concept, but also determined that a SMO is feasible and necessary for bowling," Executive Director Roger Dalkin said. "Now everyone involved recognizes the depth of information that is needed for us to move forward. Quite frankly, expecting one task force to come up with all the answers is unrealistic." Separating the work into two distinct functions will streamline the process and get to the detail, he added.

While committee members have yet to be announced, it is known that some of the original task force members will be retained on both committees and grassroot representatives will be added to the study teams.

Information about the concept of forming the USBA will be shared with local and state associations during summer jamborees and state/provincial workshops. Leadership of ABC, WIBC and Young American Bowling Alliance (YABA), as well as the ad hoc committees, expect to obtain quantifiable feedback about the SMO concept during these meetings. Recommendations will be collected and evaluated so that necessary revisions to the plan can be made in preparation for presenting a final document to the boards for review at their fall meetings.

Should the boards approve the concept, action would be taken by delegates at the 2002 ABC Convention and WIBC Annual Meeting. The corporate laws for each organization require a two-thirds vote to approve the action. No decision has been made how many of the five affected organizations must approve the action for the initiative to move forward.

The SMO feasibility study was initiated in January 2000 by the membership leaders of ABC, WIBC and YABA to consolidate their organizations as well as USA Bowling and Bowling Inc. Recommendations to the concept can be directed to: Therese Abair, Project Manager, Single Membership Organization, P.O. Box 221304, West Palm Beach, FL 33422, Fax: (801) 751-1561, E-mail: [email protected].

-Dorin-Ballard Starts To Pull Away From The Field At Albuquerque

05/30/2001 - PWBA
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, regained her eagle eye and sharp form Wednesday morning to put 226 pins between herself and her nearest competitor, Cara Honeychurch of Australia, after the second round of match play in the $50,000 Albuquerque Open at Silva Lanes.

Dorin-Ballard, who saw her lead shrink to 32 pins at the conclusion of Tuesday night's competition, won seven of eight matches and tossed a high game of 278 to increase her total pinfall to 8,102 and better her match play record to 11-5-0. She is out-averaging Honeychurch by more than seven pins a game, 228.58 to 221.05, as she marches toward the top-seed position for Thursday night's stepladder finals.

"Really, I'm not even thinking ahead to being top seed, or even the TV show itself," Dorin-Ballard said. "I'm just thinking about winning each match as it comes, so that I can get myself in position to be on the show.

"I think that in past years, I might have hurt myself by looking ahead too much. I'm taking things one day at a time now, trying to live and compete in the moment. Once you start looking ahead too much, you start falling behind."

Honeychurch consolidated her second-place position by improving her match play record to 12-4-0 and total pins to 7,876. Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Mich., is in third with 7,791 pins and a 10-5-1 match play record. Defending champion Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., is holding off Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., for fourth place with 7,654 pins and an 11-5-0 record. Macpherson currently has 7,619 pins and a 9-7-0 match play record.

Match play concludes following the 6:30 p.m. squad Wednesday evening, and the top five scorers will advance to the championship round Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Nos. 3, 4 and 5 bowlers will square off against each other in the opening one-game shootout match, with the winner facing the No. 2 bowler in the semifinal pairing. The winner of that match takes on the tournament leader for the $9,000 first place check and 2001 Albuquerque Open title and trophy. In addition, any of the top five who rolls a perfect game during the championship round will receive a $50,000 bonus, courtesy of Travelodge.

The finals will be aired on ESPN2 Monday, June 4, at 9 p.m. and re-aired Tuesday, June 5, at 3 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern).

-Dorin-Ballard Holds Onto First At $50,000 Albuquerque Open

05/30/2001 - PWBA
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, continues to lead after 26 games of the $50,000 Albuquerque Open at Silva Lanes, but her 141-pin lead was chipped down to 32 pins thanks to a determined effort by Cara Honeychurch of Australia.

Honeychurch, who has ousted Dorin-Ballard from the TV finals the past two weeks, won six of eight matches and pushed her total pinfall to 5,948 with an eight-game set of 1,897 pins Tuesday night. Dorin-Ballard, on the other hand, posted a 4-4-0 record with a 1,778 series for a grand total of 5,980 pins.

"I believe that you can never have enough pins, but I lost a couple of games by one or two pins tonight and missed getting the bonus pins [awarded for winning a match]," Dorin-Ballard reflected. She said that she planned to refer back to her "diary" for Wednesday's competition. "Since we began bowling on the Sport Bowling condition, I've been writing notes after each round, recording the equipment I use, how the lanes break down each round, and so forth. It really helps me, and I'll refer to that tomorrow to get back on track."

Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y., is in third place with a 5-2-1 record and 5,864 pins. Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Mich., holds fourth place with 5,835 pins and an identical 5-2-1 record. Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., rounds out the top five with 5,773 pins and a 4-4-0 record.

The top 24 return at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday for 16 more games of match play. The field will be cut to the top five after Wednesday night's action; those players will vie for the $9,000 first prize Thursday night in the stepladder finals at Silva Lanes, beginning at 7 p.m. The championship finals will be televised on ESPN2 Monday, June 4 at 9 p.m. and re-broadcast Tuesday, June 5, at 3 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern).
