-Williford One Of 16 Still Alive In WIBC Senior Queens

      WAUWATOSA, Wis., - Jean Williford of Carthage, N.C., who's held a solid tournament lead since Tuesday, continued atop the field following qualifying competition Wednesday morning in the 2002 Women's International Bowling Congress Senior Queens Tournament at AMF Bowlero Lanes.

      The runner-up in the 2001 WIBC Senior Queens Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Williford joined 14 other bowlers plus defending champion Fran Minton, Iowa Park, Texas, in advancing to double-elimination match play Wednesday afternoon and Thursday. Williford completed the 12 qualifying games with 2,352. Freida Gates, the 1984 WIBC Tournament singles champion, was second with 2,281. Shirley Hintz, a three-time WIBC Tournament champion, was third with 2,238.

      The original field of 86 participants bowled eight qualifying games, four each on Monday and Tuesday. The top 22 players advanced for another four qualifying games Wednesday morning before the cut to match play.

      The leader in the winners' bracket and leader in the contenders' bracket meet for the title at 2 p.m. Friday. The champion will receive a prize check, crystal trophy and jeweled tiara.

      The WIBC Senior Queens, sponsored by Storm, is open to all WIBC members age 55 and over. The event is being conducted on WIBC/American Bowling Congress Sport Bowling lane conditions. Sport Bowling is an optional membership level for WIBC and ABC members designed to emphasize accuracy and consistency and return credibility to the sport.

      The 16 match play qualifiers:

-Barrette Jumps In Front At WIBC Queens

      WAUWATOSA, Wis. - Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. did just enough during the final five games of qualifying Wednesday morning to take the No. 1 seed heading into the match play rounds at the Women's International Bowling Congress Queens tournament. Barrette's 1,139 pin fall propelled her final qualifying tally to 3,458 and her average to 230.3.

      "The most important thing in this tournament is to advance to match play, however finishing the qualifying rounds with a little momentum is a nice confidence booster," said Barrette.

      A WIBC Queens champion in 1999, Barrette's pin fall total was 153 pins better than Shana Ray, Corpus Christi, Texas who finished with 3,305 and 220.3.

      Ray completed the 2001 Professional Women's Bowling Association season as the 20th ranked player. She finished the year 24th in earnings ($21,217) and averages (201.11) and 20th in competition points (7,498).

      The third place qualifier Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. finished eight pins behind Ray. The top 63 players following the morning competition advanced to double-elimination match play Wednesday afternoon along with defending Queens champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, who was seeded No. 32 into the tournament bracket.

      Area bowlers who finished in the top 64 include Robin Crawford, West Allis, Wis., Paula Mikkelson, Neenah, Wis., Lisa Vint, East Troy, Wis. and Gina Daroszewski, Milwaukee.

      Match play rounds started at 1 p.m. and continue through Thursday afternoon.

      The Queens tournament, sponsored by Tri-Properties-Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, concludes with the top five bowlers facing off in the stepladder finals on Friday at 7 p.m. The championship round will air on ESPN2 on Tuesday, May 14 at 9 p.m. (Eastern).

      The WIBC Queens and Senior Queens is being conducted on Women's International Bowling Congress/American Bowling Congress Sport Bowling lane conditions. Sport Bowling is an optional membership level for WIBC and ABC members designed to emphasize accuracy, consistency and return credibility to the sport.
