Walter Ray Williams Jr. Paces Masters Field Winning First Two Matches
01/18/2003 - Bowling Newsline
RENO, Nev. - After leading qualifying, five-time Bowler of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. continued his blistering pace by winning his first two matches in the 53rd American Bowling Congress Masters at the National Bowling Stadium.
Williams remained in the winners' bracket of the double-elimination competition by defeating Nick Vogelgesang of Cincinnati in his first match, 677-627, and David Ozio of Beaumont, Texas in the second, 711-639.
"So far it's been about making the right adjustments," Williams said. "Bowling across the house I've been able to stay on top of the changing conditions. I'm not doing anything major, just doing what I need to do."
Defending champion Brett Wolfe of Tempe, Ariz., who was automatically seeded into match play, was eliminated after losing his first two matches. Other past champions eliminated were Rick Steelsmith, Wichita,
Kan.(1987) and Ernie Schlegel, Vancouver, Wash. (1996).
Among the past champions still alive are Mika Koivuniemi of Finland (2000), Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla. (1993), Brian Boghosian, Feeding Hills, Mass. (1999) and Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J. (2001).
Match play continues on Saturday with the 32 remaining players battling for the four spots on the ESPN-televised finals to be conducted Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Eastern. This year's event is the richest in Masters history with a $386,000 prize fund and a top prize of $100,000.
