-Sunnybrook Lanes In Michigan Awarded 2003 Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship

01/13/2003 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS - The Professional Women's Bowling Association is pleased to announce that Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights, Michigan will host the 2003 Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship from May 24 thru June 1.

"The U.S. Open is always one of the highlights on the PWBA schedule," said PWBA President John Falzone. "The caliber of competition and the depth of the field will provide the Detroit area with the finest athletes our sport has to offer."

Guaranteed to be the richest prize fund of the 2003 PWBA schedule, the Open will feature a minimum first place prize of $30,000 and an estimated total purse of $200,000.

PWBA Director of Marketing Jan Schmidt noted that several local and national U.S. corporations have expressed an interest in assuming a sponsorship role that could result in a prize fund increase prior to the tournament.

The Open finals will be televised on ESPN on June 1 at 1 p.m. (ET). The telecast will kick off the first of seven consecutive Sundays where the PWBA will be broadcast live on ESPN in a 90-minute time slot.

"The PWBA has done a great job in its site selection for this year's Women's U.S. Open. We're very pleased that it is returning to the Detroit area -- an area often considered to be the bowling capital of the world," said Bowling Proprietors' Association of America President Jack Moran. "It has all the right ingredients, great area, great host facility, great hospitality headquarters and great sports fans."

Regarded as one of bowling's most coveted championships, Kim Terrell, Antioch, Calif. will headline a star-studded field of professional, collegiate, and amateur bowlers. Terrell, who won the 2002 Women's International Bowling Congress Queens tournament and the 2001 U.S. Open, will be attempting to win at least one major title in three consecutive seasons.

"It doesn't get much more exciting than the U.S. Open," said Randy Shank, Sunnybrook Lanes Proprietor. "We are thrilled to be the host and expect that the tournament will prove to be a world class event."

Complete with 58 lanes, a challenging Donald Ross 27-hole golf course, and 100 comfortable guest rooms, Sunnybrook offers one of the finest year-round recreational centers in the Detroit-area.

"Bowling has always been a driving force that has helped our economy," said David Beachnau of the Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We can't think of a better location for this prestigious event than the bowling mecca of America."
