***** Elizabeth Dole Considers White House Lanes a "Perk" *****
In all the talk about presidential salary increases, who'd think that bowling would come up. But this week it did, as this AP newswire story attests:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Elizabeth Dole would be satisfied with the $200,000 annual salary paid to presidents.
In a letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert, the Republican presidential contender said the proposal to double the salary for future presidents was "ill-advised."
She said $200,000 was "fair and appropriate," given the "cost-free housing" in the White House, free travel, the use of Camp David and "perks" like a bowling alley, movie theaters and putting greens as added compensation for the president.
"The value of these benefits adds up to millions of dollar annually," Dole said in the letter. "When all these benefits are taken into consideration, I believe the taxpaying public would join me in opposing a presidential pay raise."
Congress is debating whether to raise the president's salary for the first time in almost 30 years.
