***** Welcome Notes *****
Coming off their Lilac presence, several GSTDs will be invading Cincinnati to bowl at the Hoinke later this week to defend their $17.40 checks from last year and represent Kegler's Connection and the Bowling Forum. This also explains the delay in this week's edition as we made a side trip to Cedar Point and will take in Kings Island later this week. I will say that the fear of striking out in the tenth is nothing compared to the 300 ft. drop of Millennium Force.
Meanwhile have a safe and sane Fourth of July, and we'll see you again from the Left Coast.
***** New Book Blames Society For League Bowling's Decline *****
By Steve Mermelstein
Professor of Public Policy and Harvard University Clinical Scientist, Robert D. Putnam, writes in his new book, Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, that today's society has become increasingly disconnected from civic life and social networks such as bowling leagues and proposes that this phenomenon symbolizes a much broader and vitally significant social change.
After years of research, Putnam validates his original thesis: that over the past thirty years we have become ever more alienated from one another and from our social and political institutions, and that this disengagement poses a critical threat to our personal health, local communities, and national well-being.
According to Putnam's research we spend about 35% less time visiting with friends than we did thirty years ago, and American families have dinner together only two-thirds as often as they did a generation ago, belong to fewer organizations that meet, know our neighbors less, and even socialize with our extended families less often. By virtually any possible measure, Putnam found, Americans today are increasingly disengaged, not only from the public sphere, but from informal and private social relations. Putnam believes that these disconnections can directly explain why people have lost interest in league bowling and why it continues to decline.

***** Dave Davis Wins First Title since 1996 *****
LAS VEGAS -- Dave Davis won his first title in four years June 23, and was almost apologetic about it.
The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer from West Palm Beach, Fla., defeated good friend Dick Baker, Henderson, Nev., 215-187, to win the inaugural Orleans Casino Senior Open at The Orleans Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center. The win was the fourth of Davis' senior career (he also has 18 National Tour titles) and earned him $18,000.
"I still don't understand how I won today," said Davis. "Some weeks you finish 10th and feel like you should have won. This week I'm standing here shaking my head trying to figure out how I ended up the winner. I feel so bad for Dick . . . he's a good friend and he really should have won this event. Good things just didn't happen for him today."
Davis secured a spot in the title match after sneaking by Johnny Petraglia and Ron Krippelcz in the semifinal "shootout" match. Davis finished the match first, posting a 197 score. Petraglia, Manalapan, NJ, and Krippelcz, St. Louis, each had a chance to win if either could strike on his first shot in the 10th frame. Neither did as Krippelcz finished with a score of 195 and Petraglia had a 190 game. Petraglia, who qualified second, earned $9,000 for third and Krippelcz garnered $8,000 for fourth.
"I thought I threw both of those shots well," said Baker of the two costly splits that left him with the second-place check for $10,000. "The lanes were breaking down fast and I guess I didn't get the extension I needed on those shots and they went high."
Since Davis' last win (1996 ABC Senior Masters), he has had surgery
on his right knee that almost ended his career.
The PBA Senior Tour will conclude the summer with the Northern
California Senior Classic (non-televised) at Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood,
Calif., July 2-6.
