2. Tip of the Week

This week George talks about being a good sport

We all love the game of bowling. Granted, it is a love/hate relationship sometimes, but nonetheless, we are all in this sport because we enjoy it. The very nature of league and tournament bowling dictates that there will be "winners" and "losers". If you've been involved with this sport for any amount of time, most likely you've been on both sides of this coin.

No one likes to lose, but sometimes it just happens. It is important to remember that bowling is not life or death. The sun will come up the next day regardless of who wins on any given league night. Throwing things around and using derogatory language after a loss does not change things, and makes the person using that type of behavior look foolish. Learn to be a good sport when you lose. If you can't walk up and shake your opponent's hand, at least have the level headedness to not use behavior that would be looked down upon. It will make bowling with you much more enjoyable.

On the flip side, no one likes a gloat. Sure, it's a great feeling when you win, and you should express such feelings. However, there is a line between being happy and gloating. Remember, next time, it could be you that is on the loser's side of things. Don't rub it in your opponent's face that you beat him, that makes you look just as foolish as if you had lost and used the behavior listed above. Be a good sport: Shake their hand, wish them well, and let it at that.

We all want to win, and we hate to lose. Good sportsmanship will make both experiences better.

Till next time,
George Freeman

3. Beware Of That Attachment
By Steve Mermelstein

Several of the bowling industry's biggest names, including some employees of the PBA and several ball manufacturers have been caught sending out viruses! Actually, they have been infected with a strain of the VBS/SST worm virus after opening an e-mail attachment they believed was a picture of Anna Kournikova.

The VBS/SST worm is similar to the Love Bug, which infected many computer users last year. The worm is distributed by sending itself to all e-mails listed in the address book of an infected user's e-mail program. The e-mails may appear to be, to the untrained eye, an ordinary e-mail with a picture attached. The e-mails are reported to have a subject line of "Here you have ;o)" with the e-mail reading "Hi: Check This!" among other variants.

Be especially wary of any file attachments that contain the extension ".vbs", which is a scripting file that is often used by these types of worms. As always, take caution when downloading attachments by confirming they were actually sent to you by the sender and then checking the attachment with a recently updated anti-virus program before opening. Some attachments may be fun, but today downloading one maybe as dangerous as leaving your front door unlocked or your keys in your car's ignition.

More information and removal instructions for this worm can be found at:

10. ABC to Allow 10 Minutes of Practice
By Angel Zobel-Rodriguez

According to "The Captain's Nest," an ABC newsletter for team captains, the 2001 ABC Champtionships Tournament will allow ten minutes of practice for bowlers during team event. During doubles and singles event, bowlers will still be allowed only one ball on each lane, but the team event change comes as a response to many bowlers requesting longer practice times to warm up their bodies as well as line up on the lanes.
