1. Welcome Notes
After 3 years, without any break, the volunteer writers of the Kegler's Connection had to take a short hiatus. We're back now--just in time to bring you news on the second leg of the PBA schedule and other news from around our sport. In this issue, you'll read about....and George will talk about taking your time on spares.

2. Tip of the Week
This week, George talks about taking your time on spares.

First of all, I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. :)

Spares are the foundation of this sport.  The old saying goes, "Strike for show, spare for dough."  In today's high-powered era, however, spares are sometimes not given the attention they require.  It's great to have eight or nine strikes in a game, but when the other frames are missed spares, that 250 game becomes 200-210 in a hurry.  Here are some things to think about concerning spares.

First of all, take your time.  Yes, it's frustrating leaving a corner pin on a good shot, or making a bad shot and having to shoot the spare, but just going up and throwing the spare shot without lining up is a good way to throw away pins.  Take a deep breath, think about where you want to line up for the spare, and take your shot.  That extra couple seconds between strike and spare shots can make the difference between making your spare and missing it.

Next, when leaving single pin spares, it's best to not hook the ball into the pin.  The more boards you cover, the more of a chance the ball has to reacting erratically (especially with today's equipment).  It is advisable to learn how to throw a straight ball at spares.  Next time you're practicing and leave a spare to shoot at, try breaking the wrist back and relaxing your wrist at the point of release.  This will create a minimum of rotation, allowing the ball to go straighter down the lane.  Many players also invest in plastic bowling balls, since plastic balls generally go a lot straighter than reactive bowling balls.

Spares are the key to success in the long term.  Make the most of your spare game, you'll be glad you did.

Till next time,
George Freeman

10. ABC/Brunswick World Team Challenge to Celebrate Its 10th Season in 2002

Bowling's premier team tournament series, the American Bowling Congress/Brunswick World Team Challenge, begins its 10th season in February with the first of 14 U.S. qualifying events leading to the Grand Championship.

Since its inception in 1992, the Team Challenge has provided ABC members with an innovative, fun and competitive team bowling experience and the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in prize money through prize funds and bracket play.

All Team Challenge events feature regular format team and the highly competitive Baker format where each of the five players rolls two frames in one game.

After a 2000 participant survey, a series of format and rules changes were made for 2001 enabling more teams to cash and advance to title contention than would have previously been the case.

As a result of the changes, more than 75 percent of the bowlers winning a 2001 Team Challenge qualifier experienced their first Grand Championship. In previous years, less than half of the competitors advanced to the championships.

During the 2001 season, more than 640 teams entered the 15 regional qualifiers hoping to qualify for the Grand Championship. Along the way, bowlers competed for more than $900,000 through prize funds and brackets.

Based on the popularity of events conducted in Florida and the Northeast, two qualifiers will be conducted at Seminole Lanes in Seminole, Fla. (Feb. 9-10 and Sept. 14-15) and Bradley Bowl in Windsor Locks, Conn. (March 23-24 and June 22-23).
